Cleveland Park Promenade Gardeners

about

We are an informal neighborhood organization dedicated to nurturing beautiful plantscapes on Cleveland Park’s commercial strip.

The gardens abut Connecticut Avenue on the east side of Cleveland Park’s commercial district and were added when the District removed the service lane used to park cars.

WHAT'S PLANTED?

First, the District planted trees. Then, at the neighborhood’s request, it added $30K of landscaping plants, including natives. The beds contain perennial flowers such as daffodils, catmint, milkweed, and daisies, along with various ground covers and grasses.

LOOKS EMPTY NOW. WHY?

The starter plantings are small and many disappeared underground for winter. With time and care, they will fill in and flourish.

IS THE DISTRICT INVOLVED?

No. The District wanted to cover the beds in rubber. At the neighborhood’s request, it substituted plants but disclaimed all responsibility for maintenance. The city’s initial investment can help transform the commercial area into a vibrant public space. But to thrive, the landscaping will need support from Cleveland Park’s neighbors and friends.

FUNDING NEEDS

We need funds for expenses, including signage, watering, tools, mulch, and annual flowers. As some plants flourish and others decline, we will need to replant. Additional funds will permit improvements such as stone borders, benches, more planters, and lighting. And, if successful, the gardens might be extended to the west side of Connecticut Avenue.
